We, at Beyer Motor Works, believe that a great vehicle starts with having great tires to drive on. You know that the bases of any vehicle start with the rubber on the road. But what happens if your tires start to wear or begin to look uneven?
Your tires being unbalanced can become a safety hazard very quickly for you, your passengers and the drivers around you.
Tires can become unbalanced due to a number of factors. Normal, everyday driving can cause the tires to become unbalanced if you are driving on rough roads or ones that have lots of bumps or pot holes in them.
Temperature change and altitude can also change the balance of your vehicle, like when the weather starts to change and you get a drastic drop in temperature suddenly or if you are driving into a mountain range, when you start your climb you should check your tire pressure and then when you are no longer at the high altitude ranges you should also check your pressure to ensure that it hasn’t changed and created an imbalance with your tires.
When should you get your tires balanced?
- If you feel vibration in the steering wheel, the floorboard or your seat.
- When you get them rotated, generally every 5,000 miles.
- If you notice uneven tire wear.
- If you get a flat and repair a tire.
- When you buy any new tire(s).
- A weight that used to be on the rim falls off.
- At the very least every two years, once yearly if you drive rough roads.
Typically, most professionals recommend that you have your tires balanced every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. This falls roughly in line with your BMW oil change schedule, meaning that you can have several of your vehicle’s maintenance tasks performed at the same time – which is best for everyone.
If you begin to feel vibrations when driving this can be caused by an imbalanced tire and wheel assembly or something else — a bent wheel, a damaged tire (which won’t be fixed by balancing), worn suspension parts or other aging components. If you feel a vibration, don’t wait to get it identified, bring your BMW in straight away to have your tires balanced and inspected. This is not only for your safety but for the safety of those around you as well.
